Group Discussion
1. What is voice and choice and what effect does it have on the learning process?
2. What does a classroom look like without some voice and choice? 3. Is it possible to offer to much voice and choice? How do you know the proper level of voice and choice? 4. Give an example of voice and choice in a project that you've done. |
Action and Assessment
Take a few minutes to evaluate your project using the following rubric. Remember that voice and choice can go either way for students. A teacher can give too much voice and choice, which drowns the student, of they can give too little voice and choice, which is demotivating. Where does your project currently fall?
1. If your project contains too much voice and choice, spend some time developing some choices to help scaffold the process for students.
2. If your project is too controlled and doesn't allow for any voice and choice, brainstorm how you could open it up a bit more. Which parts of the process could be given voice and choice? Driving question development, texts and resources, people to work with, tools to create final products, organization of tasks, etc.
3. If you're interested in connecting your content to student interests, develop a survey. Any information about student interests can be helpful in designing a project with adequate voice and choice.
