Pros:
Students learn how to follow a style guide as a team. This is hard for them to do because it's so easy for them to edit their portion of the video in their own little world. In order to meet the final criteria for following an agreed upon theme, they have to plan, talk to each other on a regular basis, and be willing to critique another student's work. There's no way to succeed at this project without collaboration. This project contains rich, critical thinking activities. Students analyze a popular kinetic typography video and reverse engineer the style guide they used. Later in the project, they evaluate their video based on a rubric that assesses their ability to follow a consistent style and theme. Following that, they do the same for their peers. At the end of this project, every students' project will have gone through at least three rounds of critique and revision. Cons: It's difficult to find an inspiring story that's worth animating. At the end of this project, we felt like the original videos with the head shot of the person talking were more powerful than the animations we had created. We grew a great deal in our ability to animate and collaborate in a unique context, which was fulfilling, but in the end, we did not feel like we inspired all that many people. I think it comes back to authenticity. The way the project is designed right now doesn't bring the level of authenticity that I would consider Gold Standard. Suggestions for Improvement: Collaborating with an English class and animate something that students write. Poetry, spoken word, and rap are excellent samples for animation. I think this will bring greater authenticity and meaning to the students. We spent almost a week landing on something we felt was inspiring. Lots of searching, watching, and evaluating. I plan to shorten this process in the future b/c there wasn't a great deal of learning happening during this time. I think it could have been accomplished in two days. |
