I'm actually in the midst of this project right now! (Jan 1st, 2017). All of this represents my current thinking on the project.
Pros: This project teaches students how to have a voice through making screencasts. Screencast-o-matic is free so students can potentially make screencasts at their homes or in future classes with ease. Every time I've taught students a new video production skill, I've seen it manafest itself again in other classes outside of video production. In the distribution phase, students learn how to communicate ideas with a variety of innovative tools. The fact that they make a database and send out mass emails to those who are interested is amazing. Cons: We'll see! I don't know any cons yet. I have no idea on the timing of activities. The production and post-production weeks are pretty loose, but it's designed that way intentionally to give students more ownership of the process. Suggestions for Improvement: I don't feel like this is authentic as it could be. I almost wish that students could have more voice and choice in the selection of tutorials. I mandated that the tutorials be about formatting in MLA in the Pages app b/c it's a need at our school that English teachers gave me. It would be awesome if it was more global and if students interacted with the online community to determine what tutorials are needed. |
