Professional development never ends in teaching. As much as we would like our lessons to be perfect, they can always be improved. There is a saying in video production that says “editing never ends.” Video making is a work of art, and there is always something that can be tweaked. The same goes in teaching, not necessarily because all teachers are perfectionists or artists, but because the tools and students change constantly. Handheld tablets and wireless technology are perfect examples. Both technologies have allowed teachers to plan activities that increase collaboration and creativity. These things are helping students prepare for future professions in the 21st century in ways that old technology cannot.
Like professional development, leadership is also critical to the success of any school. In my first year of teaching, I looked to my principles and department heads for guidance. I felt ill equipped as it was, but without the leaders around me, I would have made far more mistakes than I did. Their wisdom, guidance, and vision pushed me forward to success. I have taught for more than nine years, and I feel confident now to take on an administrative role at my school. While I have no idea where this leadership role will take me, I am simply stepping into it to share the same gifts that leaders taught me when I first started. As teachers lead their students daily, I would encourage them to also think about leading each other. If a school is committed to learning and leadership, it will be a rich culture of learning that never stops growing. No matter what changes occur in the environment or student body, the school will be able to adapt and grow.
