Promoting digital citizenship could become an entire class in schools today, but I think students will learn the most about being responsible digital citizens if elements of it are incorporated into every teacher's curriculum. Since the elements of being a good digital citizen are vast, it takes a team of people to train a group of students to be responsible digital citizens. English classes can focus on citing sources properly. History classes can teach online research and source evaluation skills. Theology classes and administrators can advocate safe digital practices online. The natural desire for our many of our students is to make wrong choices online. With that being said, we play a huge role as teachers and administrators in teaching them how to be responsible digital citizens.
Doing a lot of work in video production has forced me to learn quite a bit about copyright law. While it would always be easier to download a song off YouTube and use it in a video instead of paying for the proper license, I understand the risks and respect the time it took for the author to make the song. The same goes with imagery, screenplays, and stock video footage. I pass this knowledge on to my students whenever we create videos and blogs. Normally, they follow right along as many of them want to do the right thing. Without teaching and modeling good digital citizenship, many students would fall prey to many of the problems that exist in the digital world, illegal downloading, hacking, cyber-bullying, and online scams just to name a few.
